League of Voices for Equality
GMCW joined with members of other GALA choruses from around the country to form a festival chorus titled L.O.V.E. - League of Voices for Equality, a vocal music project at the Equality March for Unity and Pride on Sunday, June 11, 2017 on the National Mall. The mission of L.O.V.E. was to bring singers together to raise their collective voice in the fight for equality and justice for all people. The Equality March was from 10:00am until 2:00pm, and L.O.V.E. performed during the March and at the beginning of the Rally on the National Mall.
Hundreds of singers came into town to be a part of this project. Some of the choruses that joined GMCW were members of:
Gay Men's Chorus of Charlotte
Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida
Knoxville Gay Men's Chorus
New York City Gay Men's Chorus
New York City Master Chorale
Philadelphia Gay Men's Chorus
San Diego Gay Men's Chorus
Steel City Men's Chorus
Triad Pride Men's and Women's Choruses
We collected a selection of historic protests songs and anthems which lend themselves to singing en masse while marching. Songs included: "Freedom is Coming," "Peace, Shalom, Salaam," "Make Them Hear You," "Never Turning Back," "Seasons of Love," "We Are a Gentle, Angry People," "We Shall Not Give Up the Fight," and "We Shall Overcome."
